Some of our recent work....

Blocked porch guttering.

Caversham customer – Homeowner Steve

Following a month of un-seasonally poor weather Steve noticed the porch guttering over flow at the hopper.

On investigation the vine thought to’ve been removed a number of years ago, had taken root and was growing into the drain at the top of the porch, the cast iron hopper and cast iron down drain pipe – blocking the drainage system.

With the roots compromising the cast iron, it was decided to replace the ironwork with plastic following the vine’s removal.

New outdoor garden tap.

Caversham customer – Homeowner Claire

Since buying their Caversham home, Claire and her husband had been watering the back garden using their only outside tap – which was at the front of the house. This required taking the hose through the garage and returning to the front to turn the water on. And when finished, taking the hose back to the front of the house so that the front garden could be watered and hose stored.

At the back of the house was an unvented cylinder that served one of the property’s anexes. And it was planned to tap into the cold water supply here and fit a new garden tap. On isolating the house’s water supply via internal stop tap, it was found that the cylinder’s supply was not on this water line.

As the house did not have a pavement/roadside thames water stopcock, isolating the supply would have required Thames Water to turn off supply to a number of connected roads.

After a discussion with Claire it was decided that the cold water line would be cut into live and a new stop tap installed. This took place with minimal disruption with the new stop tap as well as the new garden tap up and running in less than an hour.

Installation, maintenace & regulations

Outdoor and garden plumbing encompasses everything from simple hose taps and irrigation systems to drainage and more complex installations for garden rooms. Correct installation, especially of an outdoor tap with a double check valve, is to ensure that it works properly, safely as well as complying with regulations. (UK [Water Supply Regulations 1999]).

Installation & regulations

Installing outdoor plumbing, such as a garden tap, requires adherence to specific UK water regulations to prevent contamination (backflow) of the main water supply.

  • Backflow prevention: All new outdoor taps must be fitted with a double check valve to stop outside water from being siphoned back into the clean drinking water system.

  • Isolation valve: An internal isolation valve should be installed so the outdoor water supply can be shut off independently, especially during winter months, to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting.

  • Pipe insulation: Any pipework running along the outside of the house or exposed in unheated areas (like the loft) must be adequately insulated to protect it from freezing.

  • Professional installation: For significant installations like full water mains connections to a garden room, it’s highly recommended to use a qualified, WaterSafe approved plumber who is familiar with the regulations.

Low level guttering

Low-level guttering (typically installed on sheds, greenhouses, porches, or conservatories) remains essential for preventing structural damp and soil erosion at the base of small buildings. For these applications, Mini-Line or Compact systems are the standard choice.

Common systems for low-level structures

  • Mini-line guttering (76mm): Designed specifically for small roof areas like sheds and summerhouses. It uses a smaller diameter than standard house guttering (usually 112mm) to look more proportional.

  • Square line guttering: Often used on modern conservatories or carports for a clean, contemporary aesthetic.

  • Flexible/rubber guttering: Used for curved bay windows or round garden rooms.

2026 Maintenance and repair tips

  • Debris clearing: Because low-level gutters are closer to the ground and garden foliage, they clog faster with leaves and moss. Use a gutter scoop or a specialised brush twice a year.

  • Leak sealing: Joints often fail due to temperature-related expansion. Use a gutter sealant or replace the internal rubber gaskets (union clips) rather than replacing the whole length.

  • Slope adjustment: Ensure a slight fall (approx. 1:200) toward the downpipe. Low-level gutters are easily knocked out of alignment by ladders or garden activity.
