Electrical work - Part P regulated

Your trusted, local same-day plumbers
Some of our recent work....
Simon’s 8 year old Megaflow unvented cylinder had stopped producing enough hot water for a shower or bath.
- Cylinder’s lower immersion heater was replaced and continual hot water restored.
Henley customer – Simon (homeowner).
Simon got in touch after becoming frustrated with his Megaflow unvented cylinder when it stopped producing enough hot water for even a 2 minute shower.
As the cylinder had not been serviced for a number of years, one of our G3 and Part P electrically qualified plumbers carried one out.
In the process they found that the lower immersion heater had split and was no longer working. This was replaced and wiring connected restoring the cylinder to good working condition and Simon’s hot showers.
New electric shower installed. Plus water softener removed to improve water flow/pressure.
- Water flow increased from 7 litres per minute to 13 litres pm and the new shower was a success.
Reading customer – Joyce (homeowner).
Joyce got in touch asking us to improve her home’s water flow/pressure and to replace an electric shower. This was as her daughter Heather was arriving from Australia. And due to a long term medical condition needed to use a powerful hot shower frequently throughout the day.
The 12 year old water softener was de-commissioned, with its fused spur blanked-off. The softener was replaced with a water conditioner so that the home’s appliances continued to be protected from Reading’s hard water. It also included the removal of a then redundant pressure reducing valve (PRV) which was throttling the home’s water. This increased flow significantly by 6 litres per minute.
The old electric shower was subsequently replaced with a more powerful model. This required copper piping work in the bathroom and loft and as our plumber was Part P electrically qualified, the electrical work was done without the additional cost of an electrician.
The old water softener was disposed of without charge.

Paul came out ,waited on standby while Thames Water switched off the water supply. He fixed the burst water pipe, charged a fair price. Whilst waiting we chatted, he is a very interesting Chap. Great job.Posted on Google![]()

I have used Angus plumbing 3 times now and cannot recommend them enough. This time around I had a leak under my sink and couldn’t really work it out - turns out it was from some boxed in pipes. Plumber Paul diagnosed the issue super quick and no more leaking pipes :) super speedy, super friendly and super knowledgeable - Paul took time to explain a few things to me as well as showing how to turn the water supply off at my meter :) Do not hesitate to call for help with any plumbing issues or services 😍 thanks so much guysPosted on Google![]()

The inlet pipe to our toilet cistern developed a leak that we were unable to fix ourselves. We wanted to use a local plumber, and found Angus Plumbing online. They were able to offer us an appointment later the same day, and Paul arrived on time. He is such a lovely, friendly, positive person and we felt we had known him for years after only just meeting him. Better still, he did a very good, quick job to repair the leaking pipework and charged a very reasonable price (which included a new toilet flush system and valve). Highly recommended, and we will certainly be using Angus Plumbing again.Posted on Google![]()

Part P electrically qualified?
Plumbers need a Part P domestic electrical installer qualification to legally work with electrics in kitchens, bathrooms, wet rooms, and utility spaces etc., where water increases shock risk. This certification lets them safely install and wire appliances on existing circuits, either via sockets or fused spurs.
Bathroom fixtures
Bathrooms are considered “special locations” under Building Regulations, meaning almost all electrical work here requires a qualified installer. Our bathroom Part P electrical work includes:
- Installing and repairing electric showers: Wire a new or replacement electric shower directly to an existing or new circuit (which is otherwise a notifiable “special location” task in a bathroom).
- Wiring heating controls: Connect and wire central heating systems, boilers, motorised valves, cylinder thermostats, and programmer units.
- Fitting and replacing extractor fans: Install and wire bathroom or kitchen extractor fans and their local isolation switches.
- Shower pumps: Installing and wiring twin or negative-head pumps used to boost low gravity-fed water pressure in showers.
- Putting in illuminated bathroom mirrors: Safely wiring LED backlit mirrors or demister pads into the bathroom lighting or shaver circuit.
- Installing and fixing electric towel rails: Connecting dual-fuel or completely electric towel radiators to a fused switch outside the bathroom splash zones.
- Installing electronic bidet toilets and smart seats: Luxury Japanese-style toilets (like TOTO Washlet or Geberit AquaClean) that require a water feed as well as a dedicated, water-protected electrical spur for heated seats, warm-water sprays, and air dryers.
- Installing Whirlpool, Jacuzzi, and Air Jet baths: Specialised bathtubs featuring integrated water pumps, air blowers, and underwater LED lighting systems.
- Installing steam shower generators: Compact steam boxes installed behind bathroom walls or in lofts that feed steam into a sealed shower enclosure.
Kitchen and utility room fixtures
Building Regulations also define kitchens and utility rooms as “special locations” requiring a qualified electrical installer to put in major kitchen appliances that require both water connections and dedicated electrical supply switches. Our kitchen Part P electrical work includes:
- Dishwashers: Plumbing the water lines and wiring the unit into a switched fused spur or under-sink socket.
- Washing machines: Connecting the hot and cold water feeds and safely routing the electrical connection.
- Water softeners: Wiring the small electrical control units and pumps used in modern water treatment systems.
- Instant boiling water taps: Connecting the under-sink water boiler tanks (like those from Quooker) to a fused spur.
- Electric hobs and ovens: Connecting a standard oven or induction hob, provided these are replacing an old one or using a pre-existing cooker circuit switch.
Heating and hot water systems
Any heating or hot water system that involves installing a brand-new dedicated electrical circuit or adding electrical work requires compliance with Part P Building Regulations.
Part P itself applies to the electrical safety of fixed installations in dwellings rather than the plumbing or heating mechanics directly, but many heating systems trigger notifiable electrical requirements. Heating and hot water systems jobs our Part P qualification enables us to complete include:
- Unvented hot water cylinders (G3): Installing or altering unvented hot water storage vessels requires a dedicated G3 unvented hot water qualification, even though they also feature electrical cut-outs and thermostats covered by Part P.
- Heat pumps (air source or ground source): These high-capacity systems require substantial electrical input, dedicated circuits, and often consumer unit upgrades or supply modifications, which are fully notifiable under Part P. A recognised heat pump installer qualification is also required.
- Electric immersion heaters: Installing a completely new immersion heater circuit or fresh control wiring where none previously existed requires Part P certification.
- Electric underfloor heating: Electric underfloor heating mats or cables installed in wet environments like bathrooms or shower rooms fall under notifiable special location rules.
- Central heating system controls: Adding a brand-new power supply circuit or running entirely new fixed wiring cables for smart thermostats, zone valves, pumps, and wiring centres (common with complex S-plan or Y-plan gas/oil setups) is notifiable. Like-for-like swaps of a control box or plugging into an existing fused spur generally are not.
Ventilation & condensation control
With our Part P qualification, we install and legally sign off on a wide range of electrical ventilation and condensation control systems including:
- Standard extractor fans: Wall, ceiling, or window-mounted fans in kitchens and bathrooms. This includes wiring advanced tracking controls like humidistats (moisture sensors), overrun timers, and PIR motion sensors.
- Positive input ventilation (PIV) systems: Loft or wall-mounted units that push filtered air into a home to cure condensation. We can fully wire the units, integrate the inline comfort heaters, and mount the control switches.
- Mechanical extract ventilation (MEV): Continuous multi-point extract systems generally hidden in lofts or cupboards. We can wire the central unit and its multi-speed boost switches.
Specialised water and safety systems
Beyond standard appliances and heating systems, plumbers with a domestic electrical qualification (Part P) may also install several specialised water, ventilation, and safety systems including:
- Leak detection shut-off valves: Smart systems (like Grohe Sense Guard or Phi) that use an electric motorised valve to automatically shut off the main water supply if a leak is detected.
- UV water sterilisers: Ultraviolet lamp filtration chambers installed on the main water line (common for properties using private well or borehole water) to kill bacteria.
- Waste water heat recovery (WWHR) pumps: Systems that capture heat from draining shower water to pre-heat incoming cold mains water, which sometimes use small electrical monitoring pumps.
- Automated greywater recycling systems: Filtration units that collect water from showers and baths, treat it, and pump it back to flush toilets or water gardens.
