Waste pipe unblocking

Some of our recent work....

Blocked pipes

Caversham customer – Home owner Wendy.

Lower Caversham customer’s plumbing problem – slow draining sink overflowing when the dishwasher emptied its water.

The customer had tried using a number of heavy duty drain-unblockers as well as power-shots and a spinning drain auger to free the plumbing blockage – unsuccessfully.

Plumber’s work included cutting out two meters of blocked pipe, replacing pipework and putting in an access point so that any future blockages can be easily cleared by the customer themselves.

  • Pipe cleared and unblocked.

Reading customer – Tennant Angela.

Angela and her young family had lived in their first floor period flat – part of a large converted mansion for three years. The conversion took place in 2013.

On moving in, the kitchen sink drained slowly. This became consistently worse and prior to getting in touch, the dishwasher and washing machine had started to back up into the sink when draining and needed to be bailed out manually each time used.

On inspection (with a pipe camera) it was clear that the underfloor waste system put into the flat didn’t have the slope needed to drain properly. And over the years the waste pipe had become increasingly narrower with slow flowing and settling sediment/waste, until completely blocked.

The priority was to restore the flow which was done with a series of augering and jetting sessions.

To solve the issue, the waste pipework needed relaying with the correct slope.

The flat’s owner agreed to this and in the meantime arranged a supply of 20% white vinegar and soda crystals for them to maintain the waste pipe’s flow.

Blocked waste pipe(s)?

A blocked waste pipe is a serious issue that can escalate from a minor inconvenience into a major health, structural, and financial hazard. The primary risks associated with untreated blockages include:

Health risks and pathogens

Blocked drains create stagnant water and waste buildup, providing a perfect breeding ground for harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Pathogens including e.coli, salmonella, and legionella can thrive in blocked systems and may be ingested or come into contact with skin if water backs up into sinks or baths.

  • Respiratory issues: Damp conditions and stagnant water encourage fungal growth. The spores released into the air can trigger allergies and exacerbate asthma and other respiratory conditions.

  • Toxic gases: In severe cases, decaying organic matter trapped by a blockage will release harmful gases such as methane and hydrogen sulfide into your home, which can cause headaches, nausea, and or dizziness.

Structural damage and decreased property value

Prolonged blockages put immense pressure on pipe joints and a building’s infrastructure.

  • Leaks and subsidence: High pressure can cause pipes to crack or burst underground. Escaping water can saturate the surrounding soil, leading to subsidence (the ground sinking) and weakening your home’s foundations.

  • Internal damage: Backed-up water can overflow, causing immediate damage to floors, walls, and furniture. Over time, persistent damp may cause joists and timber frames to rot.

  • Financial impact: If left long enough to cause structural issues, your home could even become un-mortgageable or significantly decrease in value.

Pests and hygiene

  • Vermin attraction: Rotting food waste and standing water attract pests including rats, cockroaches, and flies, which can carry further diseases into your living spaces.

  • Bad smells:Decomposing materials emit persistent, unpleasant smells that permeate the home and reduce air quality.

Environmental damage

  • Pollution: When domestic or commercial drains overflow, untreated wastewater may escape into the surrounding soil or local waterways, harming wildlife and contaminating ecosystems.

  • Large-scale blockages: In the main sewer line (often caused by fat and “unflushable” items) are in some areas responsible for approximately 75% of sewer flooding incidents.

Can you fix blocked waste pipes yourself?

Happily the answer is yes and in many cases you can. And before calling a plumber, there are DIY fixes that can be tried ranging from simple chemical reactions to manual mechanical removal. The most effective approach will depend on the severity and location of the clog.

DIY quick fixes

  • Boiling water: For minor grease or soap scum blockages, slowly pour a full kettle of boiling water down the drain in two or three stages. Caution – avoid this if you have PVC pipes, as the heat can soften or damage plastic joints.

  • Baking soda and white vinegar: Pour 1/3 cup of baking soda followed by 1/3 cup of at least 5%, ideally 20%+ vinegar down the drain. The resulting fizzing reaction breaks down grime. Let it sit for at least an hour before flushing with hot water.

  • Washing up liquid: For kitchen sinks blocked by fat, pouring dish soap followed by hot water can help liquefy and flush away the grease.

Manual removal

  • Clean the p-trap: Place a bucket under the U-shaped pipe (the trap) beneath the sink. Unscrew the slip nuts by hand or with a wrench, remove the trap, and clear out any hair or debris collected inside.

  • Plumbing snake or auger: If the blockage is further down the pipe, insert a drain snake and rotate it clockwise to hook or break through the obstruction.

  • Straightened wire hanger: For clogs near the drain opening (like hair in a shower), use a wire hanger with a small hook bent into one end to “fish” out the gunk.

Advanced solutions

  • Wet/dry vacuum: For stubborn clogs, a wet vacuum can be used to suck the blockage out. Ensure an airtight seal between the vacuum hose and the pipe using a rag or tape.

  • Drain rods: If the blockage is in an outdoor or main underground waste pipe, to physically push or break the clog. Always rotate the rods clockwise to prevent them from unscrewing while inside the pipe.

When to call a professional

If DIY methods don’t work or you notice the following, getting in touch with a licensed plumber recommended by your local water company’s advised:

  • Water backing up in multiple fixtures simultaneously.

  • Sewage smells persisting despite cleaning.

  • Visible cracks, leaks at the joints, or external damage to the pipework.

Before attempting to clear a severe clog, a plumber will usually perform a drain survey. For this a flexible, waterproof high definition camera is fed into the pipe to provide a real-time video feed. This allows the identification of the exact cause (e.g. tree roots, collapsed pipe, or “fatberg”) and location, preventing unnecessary work or damage.

A high-torque electric drain auger would then be used to spin a heavy-duty cable with a specialised “cutting head” to shred through solid debris.

The gold standard, a high pressure would be used for sever residential and commercial clogs. Unlike a snake/auger which makes a hole through a clog, the multi-directional nozzles scour the entire interior wall of the pipe, and can remove decades of grease and scale buildup – restoring the pipe to “like-new” condition.
