With Thames Water annually testing over 500,000 water samples from local mains, pipes and properties with many thousands of these from the Henley area, Thames Water’s statutory annual review’s the best place to start.

And according to this 99.95% of samples taken meet Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) and UK and European legislation.

So, for Henley’s approaching 16,000 residents – they’ve some of the highest quality tap water in the UK. But, with its calcium carbonate (CaCO3) content averaging 284.8 mg/l (or parts per million), the water’s some of the UK’s hardest (where 180 ppm is considered very hard).

For homeowners, landlords and tenants this means –

• Taste and health: Hard water’s high mineral content’s a major positive for bone and dental health and a natural antacid for heartburn, but not so good for skin and hair. And yes, it does require more soap to lather than the soft water you’ll find in the South West, the North, Wales and Scotland.
  
  With a distinct, heavy mouthfeel and a slightly chalky, mineral-like or sometimes metallic taste it’s certainly not “fresh” in the crisp, mountain-stream sense. But if you’ve grown up with it, chances are that you’ll probably prefer it to flat-tasting soft water, and if you don’t there’s always the option of putting in a water filter.
  
  
  
• Limescale build-up is an issue: Because of these mineral concentrations, you’ll see limescale forming quickly in kettles, showerheads, washing machines, and water heaters. Making water softening and conditioning an essential to safeguard white goods, heating systems as well as plumbing in general.
